Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on the 28th of October, 1967 to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts is part of an extended family of Robertses, the 4th generation that live in the Atlanta area, starting in the family of her grand-father John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in theater from a young time. When he was being a student at Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. In 1953, he joined the Air Force. He was stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in an production along with Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, they got married and their child Eric Anthony was born. Walter along with his wife resigned from their Air Force service in 1957, after which they began enrolment with Walter in Tulane University. Walter began working with Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. The family moved in 1960 and moved in Decatur Georgia. Walter as well as Betty Lou produced a Saturday matinee local TV show that was aimed at children, called Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964, and they paid themselves. In 1964 Walter and Betty Lou established The Actors and Writers Workshop. The organization lasted for a total of six years. They also had Lelisa Billingsley (also called Lisa) and Julia (also known as Julie) at the time.
